As Resident Services Director at The Township Senior Living, I’ve seen firsthand how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and even the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just a nice-to-have — it’s essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.
Creating community starts with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they genuinely belong.
From my perspective, every interaction is an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and benefit from the emotional and social support that comes with genuine human connection.
To me, community in a senior living setting encompasses everyone — our residents, their families, our employees, volunteers, and our home health and hospice partners. Each plays an essential role in shaping a true sense of community. Together, we support one another, lend a helping hand, and show up when needed.
Building connections among residents is vital. Many individuals do not have family nearby, so forming friendships within the community helps them feel welcomed, valued, and supported.
I actively encourage residents to connect with one another, and our resident ambassadors play a major role in this effort. They consistently offer encouragement, lift spirits, and help create an atmosphere filled with friendship and positivity. During our monthly meetings, we also explore new ways to strengthen these relationships.

Our community maintains strong ties with the surrounding town. Located in Battlefield, Missouri, we partner with Republic High School and Springfield Schools, and we enjoy delivering treats to local businesses as well as the fire and police departments. These small gestures build meaningful relationships and remind residents how deeply their efforts are appreciated.
One of my favorite ways to bring people together is through our Happy Hours. These gatherings allow creativity to shine and give residents a chance to relax, laugh, and enjoy one another’s company. I also love our Holiday Cheer celebrations — each day brings fun, excitement, and anticipation for what’s next.
To help new residents feel welcomed, I take time to learn about their families, backgrounds, and interests. I then pair them with one of our ambassadors who introduces them to neighbors, shares meals, and accompanies them to activities and outings. I continue checking in often, ensuring they feel comfortable and connected as they settle into their new home.
At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at The Township Senior Living, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these connections can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating moments that residents and their families will treasure.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and a sense of belonging, we’re not just planning events — we’re building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, it’s the connections we nurture that make all the difference.
