As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of our community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.
After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing our outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Plant Operations Director at The Township Senior Living, I focus on the steps that help our community look its best each spring.
For our annual spring refresh, we begin with important preventative maintenance tasks throughout the community. We replace air filters, clean debris around outdoor condenser units, check for refrigerant leaks, and clean condensate drain lines to help prevent water damage.
We also lubricate moving parts, inspect electrical connections, and test thermostat settings. These steps help ensure our systems operate efficiently as warmer weather arrives.
This spring, we also launched a new Garden Club for residents. To support the program, we purchased two raised garden beds and four planters. Residents will use them to grow tomatoes, strawberries, herbs, and flowers they selected.
I assembled the raised beds, gathered the soil and fertilizer, and prepared the planters. I also added cut pool noodle pieces to improve drainage for the tomato and strawberry plants.
One highlight of the season was taking the Garden Club to Lowe’s Garden Center. Residents personally selected what they wanted to plant. The outing was a tremendous success, and residents enjoyed exploring the spring flowers and gardening options. Their excitement made the experience especially rewarding.

To stay organized, we use TELS to manage work orders and track maintenance needs. We also follow a comprehensive preventative maintenance schedule. This helps us care for both interior and exterior areas year-round.
Each spring, we typically identify a few trees, plants, or shrubs that did not survive winter. When this happens, we work closely with our landscaping company to replace damaged greenery and preserve curb appeal.
To help minimize these issues, we monitor landscaping throughout late winter and early spring. We pay close attention to signs of stress and potential bagworm activity.
We are also preparing to update all seasonal planters throughout the community. The current fall arrangements, which feature trees and boxwoods, will shift to vibrant spring plantings. These updates will create a more welcoming and colorful atmosphere.
We also plan to repurpose the three-foot evergreens from the fall displays. We will plant them along the southeast side of the building and enhance the area with decorative rock. This will complement existing landscaping features across the property.
It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure The Township Senior Living continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
