Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Lorie Houghton, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at The Township, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Making Residents Feel Like Family

A successful move-in experience begins before move-in day. It starts with the first tour, when the team begins getting to know each future resident, including their likes, dislikes, interests, and what may help them feel at home.

Those early conversations help create a welcome that feels personal. The goal is for each new resident to feel like they are not only moving into a community, but becoming part of a family.

Resident Ambassadors help create that feeling from the beginning. They are informed about upcoming tours and may open their homes so future residents can see what daily life looks like. They also greet residents during tours, say hello, and share why they enjoy living at The Township. On move-in day, ambassadors invite new residents to eat with them and talk about the events and opportunities happening throughout the community.

Leading With Heart and Encouragement

Some of the most meaningful welcomes are simple and thoughtful. Resident Ambassadors may leave flower arrangements outside a new resident’s door, write cards, or hang wreaths to help the resident feel celebrated and expected.

One meaningful example involved a new resident who moved in feeling unsure about senior living and was struggling emotionally. After move-in, one resident continued offering encouragement, kindness, and support. Slowly, the new resident began attending events and going on outings. That steady support helped her meet friends and enjoy parts of community life she may have missed if someone had not kept reaching out.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they trust their lived experience. When a resident shares how much fun an event is or talks about the friendships they have made, that encouragement feels genuine. Hearing it from someone who lives in the community helps new residents believe they may enjoy it, too.

Resident Ambassadors shape the culture of The Township because they are the heart of the community. Each ambassador brings a special quality, even if they may not always realize it. Together, they put their hearts into making The Township feel like one big family and a place where people are proud to live.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days, but the relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
