Arrow Senior Living is known for doing things a little differently and challenging the status quo within the industry. It’s just who we are! Even with all the technological conveniences of today such as social media and websites, it is still common to meet individuals with a skewed perception of what senior living looks like. In this blog, I want to share my senior living journey, why I remain committed to the industry, the biggest myth I believe exists, and how to help others overcome the myths surrounding our beautiful Township Senior Living community and services.
My journey in the senior living industry began two decades ago as a Social Worker in the skilled nursing arena. Four years ago, I joined the Arrow family as a Business Office Director and later transitioned into the Senior Living Director position. In July 2024, I had the honor of serving my community as an Interim Executive Director. It seems that I’ve been unknowingly preparing for the Executive Director role for the past 20 years.
The chance to serve our residents, families, and staff is what drives me every day. I take great pride in leading my department heads toward becoming the best versions of themselves as we work together towards a shared vision. Witnessing their growth as leaders is incredibly rewarding, and I find I learn and grow myself from each interaction. Additionally, I thrive on being a problem solver, relishing the opportunity to tackle challenging situations and find effective solutions. One of the aspects I enjoy most is listening to people’s stories; our residents have led remarkably exciting lives, with our oldest resident being 101 years old.
One of the greatest myths surrounding the move to senior living is the fear of losing independence. Moving to senior living is an act of liberation. It empowers older adults to take charge of how they want to live out their later years. Each resident retains their voice and autonomy, with ample opportunities to make choices that align with their preferences and lifestyle. They don’t need to be defined by their ailments or feel isolated. Instead, they can live with purpose by engaging in activities like voting, community outreach, and cheering on sports teams. Some may even pursue personal passions like starting a YouTube program, as shown by our resident, Tony.
I hope you found this helpful, and I encourage you to share it with others because here at Arrow, we are committed to reshaping the perception of senior living! Search #whatseniorlivinglookslike, and you will find so many great things that happen in our community every single day.
